Nature Refuge

A private land conservation initiative and nature refuge, comprising of 100 acres in the hinterland of regional mid-north coast for now and the future.

Stopping for Butterflies is a direct action not-for-profit non-government project that takes the middle out of management, with a hands in the earth approach.

It is unique because it demonstrates the combination of private land conservation, nature refuge and biodynamic food production. It is not limited in time or place and our purpose is to extend beyond our current boundaries.

Our aim is to attract those with an honest desire or social ethical philosophy asserting that nature has intrinsic value independent of its use to human beings. We welcome your interest and support!

“I was impressed by the good condition of the conservation area on Stopping for Butterflies. In contrast to the adjacent lands which have all the problem woody weeds in abundance, this 70 acre forest was almost weed free. Managing this area for habitat and connectivity values is an investment in the future!”

The aim is to link the forested areas via a series of planted shelter belts, wildlife corridors and windbreaks. On the fringe of the conservation area there is natural regeneration occurring which also requires extra planting, maintenance and nest box sites.

Projects

If you study the map above you can see the potential for further land connectivity projects. These include wildlife corridors and shelter belts along the northern and eastern boundaries of the paddock and conservation areas.

In the paddocks we have identified some remnant creek lines that have been cleared to the point that there are no surface flows on the stream beds. The former banks are barren of native vegetation and there is evidence of erosion. The aim here is to initiate regeneration so that the streams may recover and flow again. This is achieved by a targeted sequence of mobile fencing, understory plantings and tree establishment to expand vegetation. Ideal species include quick pioneers such as black wattles and white bottle brush, along with the forest giants such as native figs and red cedars.

Testimonials

Visiting the site was inspirational. Well planned and managed future food production areas as well as 27 hectares of relatively weed-free, diverse forest contributing to local habitat and landscape connectivity.

The Australian Demeter Bio-Dynamic method when applied correctly develops a deep reserve of colloidal humus, creating total soil life for food plants, medicinal plants and their allies.
